This article discusses one of the artificial insemination methods – Intrauterine Insemination or IUI and the rate of success at which a woman can conceive through an IUI procedure.

Artificial insemination Iui Success is a method commonly practiced to help couples or women, who cannot conceive a child through natural means owing to several problems in the reproductive system. Artificial insemination is also carried out to breed livestock. Intrauterine insemination is one method of artificial insemination.

Intrauterine Insemination Procedure
This procedure is carried out in women who are mostly under the age of 40 years. They are asked to abstain from sexual intercourse for more than 72 hours before the time of performing the IUI procedure.

a) The semen is collected from the donor or partner into a sterile cup. The semen is taken for sperm preparation, a procedure that is of utmost importance. This is because; untreated semen might lead to uterine cramping, and swelling etc in the woman due to the prostaglandins in untreated semen.

b) Sperm preparation is done by various methods such as sperm washing, sperm swim up method, density gradient configuration etc.

c) After sperm preparation, the woman’s womb is examined and then the prepared semen is injected into the womb using a plastic catheter like the ‘tomcat’ catheter.

d) After injection of the sperm, Iui Success the woman is asked to rest on the table for about 15 to 30 min. This is done to optimize the pregnancy rate.

The woman can get back to her day to day life style after the procedure with no restrictions. Implantation occurs between 6 to 12 days of the IUI procedure.

Rate Of Success Of Pregnancy Through Intrauterine Insemination Procedure
To discuss the success rate of IUI procedure, several factors must be taken into account. Some of the factors are:

a) Sperm count of the donor or partner.

b) Sperm motility and other contributing factors.

c) Age of the woman.

d) History of drug usage (pertained to problems of infertility).

e) Follicular and ovarian function.

f) Any obstruction in the uterine passage or fallopian tube.

g) Trauma or damage of tissue in the pelvic region.

For the success of an Intrauterine Insemination procedure, the total motile sperm count (TMSC) in the male should be at least 5 million/ml. Partners with low motile sperm count have very low chances of success. The ideal time during which the procedure must be performed is about 6 hours after ovulation in a cycle which produces at least two mature follicles. This procedure can also be performed during the luteinizing hormone surge.

Age is a very crucial factor. The woman must be less than the age of 35 years or a maximum of 40 years for higher success. Every IUI procedure has a success rate of 15 to 25% which increases to a cumulative rate of 50% with consecutive IUI procedures. Sexual intercourse after insemination may also increase the rate of success. Separation of the motile sperm cells and sperm preparation is also an important factor.
